Michigan Tech at 2013 Baja SAE event

Blizzard  Baja Enterprise

2013 Baja SAE Tennessee – Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville TN

  • 32nd place, out of 101 teams 2nd place in Acceleration,
  • 5th place in Cost, and 9th place in Pulling Events


Team Highlights

  • Hosted the 2013 Winter Baja Invitational, drawing 20 universities and 50 vehicles
  • Developed an innovative hydraulic energy storage/launch assist system
  • Designed and built carbon fiber suspension arms, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and a wide ratio planetary gearbox

Clean Snowmobile Challenge Enterprise

2013 SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge - Michigan Tech Keweenaw Research Center, Houghton MI

  • Hosted at Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center for the 10th consecutive year
  • 6th place in internal combustion (IC) class, out of 13 teams
  • 3rd in the zero emissions (ZE) class, out of 7 teams
  • Recipient of awards for Best Handling and Best Performance

Additional Team Highlights

  • Gained competence in flex fuel engine development and calibration (E40-E85)
  • Catalyst selection and emissions testing using five-gas emission analyzer
  • Second year for battery powered sled, with advances in the battery management and onboard charging systems

Formula Car Enterprise

  • Team opted not to compete in 2013 in order to improve competitiveness for 2014
  • Developed new hybrid [steel-carbon fiber] tube chassis
  • Universal wheel assembly design, improves cost and serviceability
  • Implemented closed loop pneumatic shifting
  • Continued development of single cylinder 510cc KTM engine to replace Honda 600 F4i

Supermileage Systems Enterprise

2013 SAE Supermileage – Eaton Proving Grounds, Marshall MI

  • 6th among 28 registered teams with 758 mpg
  • Demonstrated consistent performance over three runs (723, 758, and 727 mpg)
  • Design Report score of 350 was 5th highest

Notable Highlights and Innovations

  • Conducted vehicle testing over Spring Break @ Ford Michigan Proving Grounds – addressing vehicle reliability issues and optimizing ‘burn and coast’ driver strategy
  • Made advances in electronic fuel injection (EFI) and ignition control, with validation on the dynamometer
  • Initial proof-of-concept on an 8-speed transmission integrated into the rear hub, to be continued in 2014
