Michigan Technological University Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Fiscal Year 2014

Michigan Technological University is dedicated to calculating and monitoring its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventory with help from Green Campus Enterprise and the Clean Air – Cool Planet Calculator. The quantity of greenhouse gases emitted is calculated by converting the amount of each substance consumed to its emission equivalent. Emission equivalents are further converted to carbon equivalents to produce one carbon footprint. The goal of Michigan Tech is to increase environmental awareness as well as reduce its carbon footprint.

The carbon footprint is calculated using the greenhouse gas protocol found here.

Table 1: Carbon footprint calculation scopes, as described by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol

Scope 1 Emissions fully controlled by the University. Gasoline, natural gas, propane, refrigerants, fertilizer
Scope 2 Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy. Electricity
Scope 3 All other sources not taken into account in either scope 1 or scope 2. Commuting, air travel, paper, solid waste, offsets
