Project: Playing Green. Working with students and faculty from Universidad del Turabo (UT)students in our school in Caguas are being supported to work on a "green" playground for children. GreenHeart is designing playground equipment to be used in a disadvantaged community in Puerto Rico. The team plans to use as much recycled material as possible.

The engineering design process involves a series of steps and considerations. For example: each student has to inquire about existing equipment and recycled materials that can be used for the project. Industrial Design students from the UT are mentoring the high school students throughout the design/build process.

The Playing Green project gives students the opportunity to learn by doing. In the process they have to manage teamwork, reaching agreements by presenting and debating their ideas. They operate like a "virtual" company, creating a name, logo and team identity within the school. Time management and budgeting are also the responsibility of the team members making this as much of a "real world" experience as possible.
