Sustainable Solutions was founded late in the Fall 2004 semester as a response to an opportunity afforded the Michigan Tech campus through a two year grant offered through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The grant money was to be seed money for SSE to establish itself as well as provide a means of financially supporting a trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota which would provide the group with their first project.
During the 2005 Spring Break, Sustainable Solutions along with members of the Lutheran Campus Ministry through Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, traveled to Pine Ridge, South Dakota to spend a week familiarizing themselves with the Native American culture and history as well as establishing contacts for future projects.
Upon SSE’s return home, the group sat down to brainstorm all the different projects that came out of the trip as well as planning the next steps in establishing the enterprise as a student-run engineering firm focused on working with communities that normally would not be able to afford engineering services.
Sustainable Solutions has spent the Fall 2005 semester working on the Guild Hall project as well as working out the administrative details such as creating a business plan for the group.
Sustainable Solutions Enterprise’s vision is to be a team of multidisciplinary leaders that have come together to serve communities in need. SSE recognizes the diverse populations in local and world communities and looks to learn from them. It is an organization composed of skilled and talented students who hope to apply their knowledge for the betterment of our world community. |
